Student Profile: Allyson Evans

Today our student profile is on Allyson Evans, a member of our first 100% online cohort of students.

What made you decide to get an MLS?
I grew to love the profession of librarianship after I was hired by Calvert Library in Prince Frederick as their public services librarian who would build their website, carve out a social media presence and design marketing materials. I found that I was spending my free time exploring the future of libraries, so I decided to get my MLS so I could be a part of that future.

Are you currently working in a library/archive/information center?
Yes.  I worked as a public services librarian for Calvert Library from 2008 until last October, when I was hired as the YA Librarian for Charles County Public Library. In the new Waldorf West Branch, I develop the YA collection, build services and design programs for teens with the help of 12 members on the Teen Advisory Board I put together in January.

What are you currently reading or listening to?
Since being hired as a YA Librarian, I’ve been playing catch-up with popular YA titles during my commute. In the last few months, I’ve listened to The Maze Runner, The Giver, Matched, and Fahrenheit 451. I’m currently on the last disc of the last book of Libba Bray’s A Great and Terrible Beauty trilogy!

What is your favorite book?
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card holds a special place in my heart for its story and foresight. I’m really looking forward to the movie coming out this year.

What is your favorite band or musician?
My dad got me into Pink Floyd when I was a kid, and I’ve never looked back. These days, I also really love the song Big Jet Plane by Angus and Julia Stone.

What is your favorite sport and/or team?
If they try hard and play well, I’m on their side.

What is your favorite place to visit?
I love the rain and gloom of the UK, since I can hike in it during the day, then hide from it at night in warm, fire-lit pubs with a pint of Guinness, “chips” and English mustard.

Do you have any pets? If so, what kind?
I have a charming but complicated German Shorthaired Pointer named Kenzie.

What is your favorite quote?
Aut inveniam viam aut faciam. Either I will find a way, or I will make one.

List one interesting thing about yourself that most people don’t know:
I’m an Aramco Brat – I was raised in Aramco camps in Saudi Arabia for fourteen years until I had to return to the US to finish my education. As such, I have a fondness for chicken schwarmas, zaatar and weirdly-spiced pizzas.

What do you like most about the Online MLS Program at UMD?
I enjoy and am thankful for the flexibility of completing coursework on my own time. This is especially true now that my dad is gone and my mom needs extra help, so I’m thankful I can be there for her instead of looking at my watch worried about missing classes.

Why did you decide to become an Online students as opposed to the traditional delivery program?
With a full-time job, driving over an hour to College Park for classroom sessions would not have been easy. I would have done so if necessary, but the Online program allows me to spend more time with the material rather than spend time on the road.
