Senior Objects Conservator at the National Museum of the American Indian – Suitland, MD

Summary

This position is located in the Conservation Department, National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), Smithsonian Institution (SI).  The employee is responsible primarily for carrying out conservation treatment on a wide variety of objects, performing collections maintenance work, and providing technical advice and support in other preservation areas such as exhibit and loan projects.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the operations of the Objects Conservation Laboratory. Plans lab work to meet schedules. This includes working with project teams, reviewing exhibit plans and drawings, and assigning objects to appropriate staff for treatment.
  • Performs a full range of accepted object conservation treatments for ethnographic, archaeological or contemporary materials.
  • Promotes and executes partnerships with Native American constituencies and creates collaborative opportunities with Native culture experts, conservation department and others.
  • Conducts technical research to better understand condition of objects, develop effective treatment procedures.
