Resource Description Specialist, American University
Description:The Resource Description Specialist provides the timely, accurate, and comprehensive bibliographic description and organization that make it possible for students, faculty, and researchers to gain access to the Library’s materials. This position plays a role in planning strategically for describing digital collections within the Institutional Repository.
Bachelor’s degree required. Master of Library Science preferred and/or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- 1-2 years of experience in a related position that demonstrates the necessary skills and abilities for the position
- Six months’ to one year’s experience using OCLC, Voyager, Alma, Islandora, or other automated library system
- The position requires an extensive knowledge of technical standards for library cataloging and automation, including national cataloging rules and standards – RDA (Resource Description and Access), Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd edition, 2002 revision, Library of Congress Subject Headings, LC-PCC PS’s (Library of Congress-Program for Cooperative Cataloging Policy Statements),MARC (Machine Readable Cataloging) tagging, Dublin Core, ISBD (International Standard Bibliographic Description) – documentation for OCLC, Washington Research Library Consortium practices, national and local systems structure and coding; and local practices
- Knowledge of bibliographic record editing tools, including MARCEdit
- Sufficient familiarity with cataloging and/or metadata practices and procedures to recognize when fields required by library guidelines are incomplete or absent

- The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to handle materials in foreign languages (e.g. French, German, and Spanish) and foresee information needs and applications
- Ability to sit at a desk and/or computer for extended hours, read computer screens and use computer keyboards
- The incumbent must demonstrate flexibility in adapting to constantly-changing organization, technology, and work procedures
- Physical demands of the job include a great deal of sitting, typing, mousing, standing, walking, and lifting and occasionally shifting books or other media
- Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, as well as reading from printed materials and computer screens, generally switching from one to the other within short periods of time
