The David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland, College Park offers a 20-hour Graduate
Research Assistantship appointment for the academic year 2017-18. The appointment begins
September 3rd, 2017 and goes through May 26th, 2018. Salary is $15,000, total; the benefits of this 12-
month Graduate Assistantship will be prorated to reflect the 9-month term of the position listed

The David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and
the African Diaspora seeks a graduate student to assist in the Driskell Center Digitization Project, a
project to preserve, reformat, digitize, and increase access to the Center’s 1,550-object art collection
and 150 audio tapes, 90 visual reels, 1,500 photographs, and 3,500 slides.
This position is supported in part by a two-year grant from the Institute of Museum and Library
Services [IMLS] through its Museum Grants for African American History and Culture program.

Working under the supervision of the David C. Driskell Center Deputy Director, Dorit Yaron, and
the Archivist, Stephanie Smith, the Graduate Assistant will work with several undergraduate students
and will perform the following duties: assist with compiling and editing policies for creating and
managing digital material; scan slides and photos (with assistance from undergraduate students);
input information into PastPerfect, a museum software database (training will be provided); assist
with reference and perform research and tasks related to processing digitized material.
The position will pay a Graduate Assistantship salary of $15,000 (or $789 per pay period) for the
appointment period (9 months, or 19 pay periods). Salary is paid on a bi-weekly basis over the work
period and is taxable. Fringe benefits for this appointment include remission of 10 credits of tuition
(but not the mandatory student fees) per semester; additional prorated benefits (see above) will be
