Wichita State University Libraries seeks an innovative, forward-thinking, and experienced professional to assume the senior leadership role for the University Libraries Special Collections and University Archives. Special Collections houses a wide array of collections in both physical and digital formats and is committed to creating and maintaining a strong service-oriented and collaborative environment. Collection strengths include: local, state, and regional history; Wichita’s business and aviation histories; political papers of local and state officials; the Aitchison Rare Books Collection, Gordon Parks Papers, and Wichita State’s institutional history. This is a hands-on faculty position in an active library environment. The Curator must be highly knowledgeable about current and emerging archival trends, technologies, and standards. The curator must also be committed to developing and promoting the use of the collections in support of learning, scholarship and research by student, faculty, community, and world-wide users. Required Qualification: MLS or equivalent degree from an American Library Association accredited program; minimum three years of professional special collections or archival experience in progressively responsible positions within an academic research library or large research collection as well as demonstrated experience using current archival technologies including a content management system to provide user services and enhance collection discovery and preservation in both physical and online environments; documented experience as a primary supervisor; and demonstrated experience working well in teams.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated knowledge of collection development for archives, rare books and special collections; of archival principles and conservation techniques; and of records management standards including contemporary and emerging digital and archival standards. The candidate will also have a demonstrated ability to build relationships and work effectively with faculty, students, donors, colleagues, and community members; demonstrated commitment and ability to work effectively with diverse populations; the ability to work independently; excellent oral and written communication skills including exceptional public speaking skills; demonstrated commitment to fundraising; demonstrated knowledge of intellectual property rights and issues as they relate to born digital content and digitized special collections; demonstrated potential to meet the University Libraries’ tenure and promotion requirements for librarianship, scholarship, and service at a level that would merit tenure and promotion; and demonstrated ability to use Microsoft and Adobe products. Salary commensurate with experience; 12-month contract; excellent professional development support, vacation and benefits, including TIAA-CREF. Faculty librarians have tenure-eligible appointments with rank.
