Position Summary: Virginia Tech’s University Libraries seeks creative and enthusiastic applicants for the position of Health Sciences Research Librarian. This is an exciting time for Health Sciences research at VT, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape parts of this position based on his or her interests and skills, and growing support for VT health sciences initiatives in Blacksburg, Roanoke, and other locations. In particular, the successful candidate will work with the Health Sciences Research Support Coordinator to develop and provide health sciences research services, and to identify and build partnerships with departments and institutes that match the successful candidate’s background and interests. As part of the Scholarly Communication Department, Research & Informatics Division, this position also supports the VT community in adoption of open research practices, such as: open access publishing and open data.

Major Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Health Sciences Research Support Coordinator, the Health Sciences Research Librarian will work collaboratively to:

  • Support health sciences research across disciplines and provide training related to health information and research practices to a diverse audiences in Blacksburg, Roanoke, and other Virginia Tech program locations
    • Provide and develop services for evidence synthesis research, including systematic reviews and meta-analyses
    • Support Implementation Science research initiatives
    • Support development, provision, and management of library services and access for the Roanoke Health Sciences & Technology campus
  • Serve as the liaison to 2-5 areas related to the incumbent’s interests, for areas such as the following: Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering and Science, Nutrition, Exercise, Medicine, Population Health Sciences, Psychology, or Neuroscience.
    • Provide for liaison areas: research assistance and instruction, collection development, outreach, and partnership towards area initiatives
  • Contribute to the University Libraries’ Digital Research and Scholarship initiatives, such as promoting open access and open research practices
  • Maintain professional growth and keep abreast of emerging areas in health sciences and the library and information profession
  • Serve on departmental, library, university-wide, and professional committees
  • Provide quality services in a professional manner with a demonstrated commitment to team efforts, service excellence, and diversity and inclusion

Required Qualifications:

  • M.L.S. degree from an ALA-accredited graduate program or equivalent degree
  • Experience providing reference / research assistance, including using advanced techniques to conduct information searches in various sources (such as research databases, web searches) for a variety of information types: research literature, patents, industry standards, datasets
  • Experience providing instruction or teaching related to information literacy, the use of library and information services and resources, or health literacy
  • Experience with health or science information resources
  • Evidence of strong knowledge or background in current and emerging trends, concepts, and theories in academic or clinical research
  • Strong interpersonal skills in outreach, relationship building, and collaboration with diverse populations and groups
  • Commitment to inclusion and diversity in the workplace and community
  • Willingness to seek membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Course work or degree in a health or life-science related field (including bioinformatics)
  • Work experience in an academic, health sciences, or medical library
  • Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following:
    • Providing information or research services support for health or life sciences researchers in an academic or clinical environment
    • Implementing active learning methods in teaching or training
    • Using advanced techniques to conduct information searches in health information sources (including research databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, PSYCInfo and web searches) for a variety of information types: research literature, patents, datasets
    • Systematic review / meta-analysis study support; conducting systematic reviews or meta-analyses; or evidence synthesis methodologies and tools
    • Research study design or statistical analysis
    • Use and training of others in the use of research software and technology, including those supporting collaborative projects
    • Supervisory responsibilities
    • Designing, planning, implementing, and maintaining complex projects
    • Collection development and management for disciplines related to health or life sciences
