Cultural Proficiency for Library Leaders


            “Cultural competence is a skill set.  It is the confidence and competence to effectively move in and out of diverse relationships and experiences,” according to DeEtta Jones. Developing the cultural knowledge, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills that can be adapted to achieve improved interpersonal and organization results in any cross-cultural situation is key for library professionals and managers who serve individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds in all types of libraries.

Jones, a widely-recognized leadership and management consultant, will lead the 7thLibrary Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) Career Institute – Cultural Proficiency for Library Leaders – on Friday, June 23, 2017, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Held in conjunction with the American Library Association’s (ALA) Annual Conference in Chicago, Illinois, this one-day session is ideal for library professionals and managers who are committed to ensuring the library’s inclusive workplace environment, have responsibility for developing diversity related programs or services, work with diverse patron groups, or have management, human resources, staff development, diversity, and/or strategic planning committee  responsibilities.

Participants will be introduced to the core concepts of cultural proficiency, how to create shared language, and how to apply cultural dexterity to their leadership role. They will learn about the impact of unconscious bias on perception and behavior and explore practical ways of moving from diversity “awareness” to “action”.

This 7th offering of the LLAMA Career Institute will focus on helping participants to enhance their professional knowledge, expertise, and skills in 4 of the 14 foundational competencies identified by LLAMA – communication skills, emotional intelligence, problem solving, and conflict resolution. Based on her work in this area, Jones will deliver a full-day interactive workshop that will allow participants to:

  • engage in discussion about cross-cultural issues and the role of library professionals;
  • understand the power of culture on values and how they influence personal worldviews and behavior;
  • increase awareness about the impact of unconscious bias on perception and behavior;
  • explore practical ways of moving from diversity “awareness” to “action”; and
  • identify ways to bring more culturally inclusive behaviors and programs to your library and to library patrons and clients.

As the Principle of DeEtta Jones and Associates (DJA), Jones manages a consulting practice with a client base that includes libraries, educational institutions, not-for-profits, government agencies, and global corporations. Before launching her private practice in 2005, Jones spent 10 years at the Association of Research Libraries as the Director of Diversity initiatives and then as Director of Organizational Learning. Previous to that, she was Director of Human Rights Advocacy and Education for the City of Fort Collins, Colorado, Coordinator for Multicultural Training at Colorado State University, and served as adjunct faculty for two Carnegie I research universities. Early in her career, Jones differentiated herself by designing and launching a leadership program for professionals from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds, which continues to exist and has become the framework for at least nine subsequent national leadership programs. She continues her faculty role with each of the leadership development programs she helped to shape and regularly offers workshops on leadership, diversity, and a variety of associated topics upon request.

She is a regularly featured leadership and management author in a wide variety of print and online journals and magazines, and she has authored a number of book chapters on diversity. Jones has published two books, the most recent being,  Hot Yoga, Coconut Water and Eustress: 10 Strategies for Bringing Intention to Your Leadership Practice. She holds a B.S. in Psychology and M.S. in Higher Education Administration from Colorado State University and an M.B.A. from The Johns Hopkins University.

The LLAMA Career Institute is open to all. Registration costs will cover workshop materials and refreshments. Lunch is not included. Costs for this LLAMA Career Institute are:

  • $225 for LLAMA Divisional Members;
  • $275 for ALA members;
  • $165 for Students and Retired Members; and
  • $375 for Non-Members.
