2016 Conference on Inclusion and Diversity in Library and Information Science

Registration for the 2016 Conference on Inclusion and Diversity in Library and Information Science (CIDLIS) is now open! CIDLIS is the one annual event at which practitioners, educators, and scholars interested in issues of diversity, inclusion,  rights, and justice in LIS can gather to learn, share, and network, CIDLIS has grown in five years to now draw attendees from across the United States and Canada, as well as from Europe and Asia. Last year’s conference had more 220 attendees and it was actively followed on Twitter using #CIDLIS2015. We anticipate the attendance at this year’s event will be even larger.

CIDLIS 2016 will take place at the University of Maryland, College Park on October 20 and 21. As always, attendance CIDLIS is free (and so is the food).

The main day of the conference will be on Friday, October 21. That day’s events will include the presentations, keynote talks, and the presentation of the James Partridge Award.

Three workshops will occur on Thursday, October 20; one from 3-5pm and two will be held simultaneously from 6-8pm.

  • 3-5pm: Making Diversity and Inclusion a Central Aspect of Your Research Agenda, led by Dr. Paul Jaeger (University of Maryland) and Dr. Renee F. Hill
  • 6-8pm: LIS Professionals as Change Agents: Tapping into Our True Potential through Collaboration with Social Work, led by Dr. Keren Dali (University of Alberta)
  • 6-8pm: Rural Libraries in the 21st Century: Places that Serve Diverse Community Needs, led by Dr. Bharat Mehra (University of Tennessee)

They will occur simultaneously, so you can only sign up for one.


Share your research, programing and educational innovations, and best practices at your institutions by submitting a paper or poster abstract. We welcome any submissions at the intersection information, diversity, and inclusion in the areas of education, professions, practice, or research. Presenting at CIDLIS is a great chance to share your ideas and innovations with professionals, academics, students, and government representatives who genuinely want to promote change in the field.

The CDLIS planning committee welcomes abstracts that address topics including – but not limited to – the following themes:

  • Increasing diversity in LIS education, professions, research, and practice
  • Libraries and information organizations as change agents
  • The impact of libraries/librarians on social justice
  • Libraries as Institutions of Human Rights
  • Programming and service to underserved populations
  • Programming and service to patrons with disabilities
  • Cultural competence in LIS
  • Methods for increasing diversity in LIS
  • Programming and service to rural populations
  • Programming and service to veterans and military families
  • Programming and services to LGBTQ communities

Submitted abstracts must describe papers that have not been published previously nor are under consideration for publication.
