The Student Archivists at Maryland (SAM) student group, in conjunction with the MLS Program, hosted the first in our series of career panels earlier this month. During the session Erin Engle, Digital Archivist at the Library of Congress; Jason Speck, University Archivist at UMD; and Margaret Huang, Archivist/Librarian at Hillwood Museum. Session moderator Joe Carrano, asked the panelists describe the real day-to-day duties of an archivist, the paths they followed to get them to the positions they’re in today, and for advice for current students to aid them as they advice they had for current students as they moved through the program.
The panelists also spent time describing where and how to look for positions in some less traditional places. Ms. Engle in particular outlined some of the ways to search for information positions on usajobs.gov that don’t necessarily include the words library or archive, but they most definitely positions that those with an MLS degree are specifically trained to do.
