I have the pleasure to announce that Ms. Tahirah Akbar-Williams is the new Information Studies Librarian for the UM Libraries.
Tahirah comes to the University of Maryland from Johns Hopkins University, where she served as Education Librarian from April 2011- 2014. During her previous post at Johns Hopkins University, Tahirah performed a wide range of activities, including developing and integrating an online Introduction to Research module for six programs; and another module Introduction to Doctoral Research for Hopkins’ new Ed.D. program, and as a Faculty Associate, helped redesign and taught a core blended course, titled Culturally Responsible Education.
Tahirah has been the recipient of a number of grants and awards, including ALA’s Emerging Leaders Award and Spectrum Scholar, and Beta Phi Mu Honor Society, and Harold Lancor Foreign Study Scholarship. She received an M. L. S. and a Master of Arts, African American Studies & African Diaspora Studies from Indiana University in Bloomington, plus a Master’s of Arts in Women’s Studies from Ohio State University.
