Library Associate I – Baltimore City Detention Center Library – Baltimore, MD

Summary of Duties:

This is a customer service position under the supervision of the Library Associate II at the Baltimore City Detention Center Library. The Library Associate I will work at the reference desk and will assist inmates in locating legal topics in both print and electronic format. The Library Associate I will have access to subscription databases for the retrieval of legal information. The Library Associate I will maintain a listing of various community service agencies and make referrals as needed. The Library Associate I will also conduct internet searches to locate authoritative and up-to-date information regarding transitional housing, drug rehabilitation programs, and ex-offender employment opportunities. The Library Associate I will assume in-charge responsibilities during the Supervisor’s absence and will also maintain contact with Enoch Pratt Free Library and Baltimore City Detention Center administrators to assure that library services and outreach are being provided on a regular basis.

Basic Requirements:
The successful candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.  The successful candidate is expected to have the communication skills necessary for providing effective reference services to a diverse population.  Knowledge of internet searching, knowledge of Microsoft Word, and a willingness to learn how to access information through subscription databases is necessary. The successful candidate must be willing to learn the skills necessary in providing a variety of library services to a diverse customer base in a maximum-security facility; ability to work as a team member; ability to lift and move boxes of books.  Must be willing to adhere to the rules and regulations established by the Baltimore City Detention Center.

Salary: $31,225 (With Possible Growth to $36,934)

Testing for Drugs:
Those under final consideration for appointment will be required to pass a substance abuse test by the City.

Position of Trust:
Those under final consideration for appointment will be required to authorize the release of and successfully complete a criminal conviction check.
